Introducing Canvas: A New Way to Use ChatGPT for Writing and Coding Projects

OpenAI introduced an exciting new upcoming feature for ChatGPT users: an interface called "canvas." This new workspace provides an interactive platform for writing and coding projects, appearing in a separate window alongside the usual chat interface. Users can now generate content directly within the canvas and easily highlight sections to make edits or adjustments.

This feature is available in beta for ChatGPT Plus and Teams users starting this week, with plans to roll it out to Enterprise and Edu users soon.
However, once OpenAI’s Canvas is out of beta, they have plans to offer it to free users of the AI platform.

What does Canvas mean for AI?

Currently, AI chatbots are unable to complete large-scale projects from a single prompt, but they can often provide a helpful starting point. Editable workspaces like canvas are designed to let users refine and correct the AI’s output without the need to generate everything from scratch again. For tasks such as coding, these tools can be especially useful, allowing users to fix errors or optimise sections of their code within the same workspace.

When testing out the new feature, users can select “GPT-4 with canvas” from the model options. In the future, however, OpenAI plans for canvas windows to open automatically when the model detects a situation where it could be useful, such as for generating long-form content or handling complex programming tasks. Alternatively, users can simply type "use canvas" to bring up the project window if they would like to use canvas.

Users can prompt ChatGPT to draft things such as an email, which will then appear in the canvas window. From there, a slider allows users to adjust the length of their email, making it shorter or longer as needed. In addition, specific sentences can be highlighted for further edits, with commands to make the email sound more friendly and change the tone. The tool also supports language translation, allowing users to rewrite entire emails in another language with a single prompt.

How OpenAI's New "Canvas" Feature Can Benefit Businesses

For many businesses, generating high-quality written content, whether for marketing, internal communications, or client engagement. With the canvas feature, employees can easily create, edit, and refine business documents directly in ChatGPT, all within an intuitive, editable workspace.

  • Automated Drafting: Teams can prompt ChatGPT to draft content such as emails, proposals, blog posts, or reports. The canvas interface allows them to quickly review and make changes—highlighting specific sections for adjustments like rewriting, shortening, or changing tone.
  • Efficient Editing: The ability to tweak and refine specific portions of text without needing to generate entirely new drafts saves time. For instance, a marketing team can adjust copy to fit different audiences or messaging styles with just a few clicks.

However, whether Canvas is used for content creation, coding, workflow automation, multilingual communication, or team collaboration, the flexibility and interactivity of the canvas workspace can help businesses achieve their goals faster and with greater precision.

By integrating AI into the occasional everyday task, businesses can streamline operations and ultimately deliver better results for both their teams and their customers. The canvas feature by OpenAI is a good tool for any organisation looking to utilise the full potential of AI in their workflows.
